Welcome to Images of Centretown.

My name is Charles Akben-Marchand. I live here in Centretown and love it.

I always carry a camera around with me, and I like to take a photo of anything that catches my eye. At best, it might tell a story. At least, it's an interesting image of something that has happened. In all cases, it's a record for the future.

In this blog I try to capture these various fleeting things about Centretown, and elsewhere in Somerset Ward, that many people might miss because they simply weren't there at the time. I'm also working on the Centretown Heritage Project to add a historical context to what Centretown has become.

I was, until recently, President of the Centretown Citizens Community Association. I remain a member of the Board of the CCCA and the Dalhousie Community Association, and volunteer in many other groups also (I used to be President of Citizens for Safe Cycling). I currently work in the office of Councillor Diane Holmes, though my blog long predates this. I mention this purely for disclosure; this blog is about Centretown, not about me. Opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect any of my employers or groups with which I volunteer.

Look for new posts at noon on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and occasionally at other times. You can also follow me on Twitter, @Centretowner

I hope you enjoy it!

  1. I did enjoy reading it all and looking at the images. Sad they were not looked after and used for something good. Not impressed with Richcraft leaving them in that state either. I like the detail type images; the fallen pillars with the accents on them. I like that you gave the age of the one particular house-I could soak up historical facts for hours. Thanks this was interesting, a bit sad but enjoyable.

  2. Hi there -- I really enjoyed reading your blog. I just bought a home in Centretown and want to learn as much as I can about my new neighbourhood.

Thanks for your insights and photos.

  3. Hi - Do you know if the Charlesfort condo building on Lisgar & Cartier has been approved? Just read your blog on this from Feb 8, 2010.

  4. I stumbled across your blog while surfing on the internet. As an Ottawa-resident who is keenly interested in the development of Ottawa, I think your blog is a true gem. Keep up the great work!
